We are an all volunteer crew utilizing the knowledge and assistance of other orchard and garden professionals community-wide.
A respite from the mess, the "un-understandable". A place to take a break, to help things grow and thrive, and a place to take pride in one's work and oneself.
The reality is that most of the Kansas City East Side is a food desert: unused and untended lots bring dumping, depression, crime etc - turning them into productive lots brings purpose to the community
Whether a renter or a home owner the practice of growing your own food, whatever it is and wherever you are brings satisfaction, sanity and nutritious sustenance along with "bragging rights".
Differentiator: One might posit there is a "restorative justice" in where we grow this food.
Of the many insults to a citizenry, the damage that building 71 highway caused to so many East Side communities is ongoing. Not only where generations of families and whole communities displaced, those who remain are now exposed to the toxins, dirt, noise and disruption of the constant traffic. These cause many life threatening and burdensome health disparities due to proximity.
The Asylum Orchard is a way to mitigate these harms by repurposing the untended and unbuildable land abutting 71 highway and using the orchard trees as a buffer, a filter which brings food and clean oxygen.
